School Council at Moorside Community Primary School

What is a school council?

A school council is a formal group of pupils within a school who are elected annually by their peers to represent them and their views.

What is the purpose of the School Council?

Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) says that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives.

A school council can provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them.

At Moorside our school council have supported and challenged ideas to improve many aspects of school life.

Our school council meets regularly with Mrs. Hall and with other members of the leadership team to discuss a variety of ideas, issues and improvements. They have represented the school in many ways including meeting with Ofsted.

We are currently working together to create child friendly Polices for our school.

Electing the School Council

At Moorside Community Primary School when electing who they think would best represent the school pupils give reasons as to why they feel the person they are suggesting would be the right one for the role.

Some suggestions given for electing someone for School Council:

‘They are good role models and will listen carefully to what others have to say’.

‘I know they will be able to speak to others in a crowd and be able to show everyone respect’.

‘You need to be brave as you have to speak and listen carefully to big groups of people like in the hall in assembly and I know they will be able to do this’.

‘They show others respect all the time’.

'To be a good school councillor you need confidence, share your ideas, a loud voice the skill to listen and know how to work as a team. The role of a school council is to help to make the school a better place to be.'

'We felt happy about joining the school council team.  We think the role of the school council is helping the children and taking care of the school environment.  We think the school council team will do a good job at helping the school and improving the learning.'
